(1)AFRICANS:- Both poets are Africans; from west africa. Gabriel is from Bayelsa state, Nigeria and was born 25th April 1921. Kofi Awoonor is from Wheta, Ghana and was born 13th March 1935.
(2)PAST EXPERIENCES:- Both poems spoke of the past. Piano And Drums called it "...the beginning" while The Anvil And The Hammer called it "...the old days". Gabriel explained that the remembrance of his past made his "...blood ripples, turns torrent" in line 9 of the poem, while according to line 4 of his poem, Kofi said he formed his "...joy of the new songs" from the trapping of his past.
(3)MUSIC:- Piano And Drums used musical instrument and terms to create imageries "I hear jungle drums telegraphing/ the mystic rhythm, urgent, raw..." (line 2 and 3) while The Anvil And The Hammer created imageries through anthems and songs "...into the joy of new songs" (line 4)
(4)BLOOD:- Both poems made vitual desciption with blood. Piano And Drums (in line 4 "like bleeding flesh, speaking of" in line 9 "And my blood ripples, turns torrent") while The Anvil And The Hammer ("washed in the blood of the goat in the fetish hut" in line 7)
(5)CLASH OF CULTURE:- Both poem portray a conflicting interest of double lifestyle; african and european
(6)DILEMMA:- The conflict of culture in both Piano And Drums by Gabriel Okara and The Anvil And The Hammer by Kofi Awoonor led both poets into a dilemma of choice.
